Mrs. Brooke Middleton & Kay Middleton
May 4, 2011
I was invited to share poetry with Mrs. Middleton's fourth grade class in White Bluff, Tennessee. Confidently several students read their poems aloud. I was blown away with their command of the English language and their ability to use certain poetic devices; simile, metaphor, rhyme, alliteration, rhyme, imagery, and repetition.
One student suggested that they help me with the creative process and so it was that we decided to write a poem--together. After some creative brainstorming we selected the subject matter FOOTBALL and the title " Cow Bells and Bullhorns". They will email me their ideas. Check back to see what develops!
Cow Bells and Bullhorns
Farm boys and cowboys
Cleats and shoulder pads
Where it is green and gold
(means yellow)
Because that is
The color of corn
And football holds
The promise of college
Girls shaking pompoms
With noise like leaves
Like rustling leaves
Blown in the wind across
The Tennessee countryside.
